WELCOME TO CASA CENOTE
LOCATED on top of the
largest cave system In THE World As documented in the IMAX movie “ journey into amazing caves”
There are no rivers in the Yucatan. all water sources are fed through an extensive underground cave system or aquafer or (CENOTE) . some areas such as here at casa cenote, the roof of the cave system has collapsed and exposed the underground river the cave then continues under the restaurant and exits in the ocean a few meters from the beach
The study, done by a student at mcmasters university, doing her masters degree, verified a flow of over 400,000 gallons per minute coming out of the cave just in front of the restaurant. The area around the cenote exit also referred to as the “ojo de agua” is the deepest point in the bay. Most places in the bay are no more than 10 to 12 feet deep all the way to the reef. The flow coming out of the cave is strong enough for even the best swimmer to have quite a work-out swimming against it… most can’t… just swim parellel to the beach and you will soon find yourself in shallow enough water to simply stand up.
The cenote just behind the restaurant is also referred to as “ cenote manati” we have seen the manatee ,many times in the past years however, we have found them to be very shy and would prefer to be left alone. increased activity at the cenote has reduced our chances of seeing them as often as in the past. The cenote can be explored by snorkel ,kayak or diving. the cenote is 20 to 30 feet deep and no places to rest until you get to the very back (about 1 kilometer) you will have to go through some low lying mangrove roots but that’s part of the adventure.
We hope you enjoy yourself here and please try to respect nature
